Edgy
I decided to reinstall, because I pretty much killed my previous install, so I offloaded my files to my Windows drive and tried to reinstall, but it wouldn't even go into the liveCD thing because it was having problems with my USB stuff. One trawling of the internet later, I found out that irqpoll was what fixed my problem. I remembered irqpoll from last time but I had never known what it did. Telling my parents of my success convinced my parents that I should become a Linux system administrator; apparently that's what they do, trawl the internet for solutions. So then it was all happy (well, mostly; the freezing killed the first install attempt). I installed all the updates and used Automatix and Easyubuntu to get the major programs and then I fixed the sound (which wasn't working) by doing sudo apt-get install alsa-oss. Then I added a 1280x1024 resolution and used it by doing sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and adding "1280x1024" to the resolutions in the "screen" section, then restarting X.
I think I killed my computer even worse though; I'm getting freezes really frequently.

I thought the goal was to make the computer better...
